Pre-school & Kindergarten (ages 3-5)
Pre Primary One is off to a second year in our new home! Children and staff are very excited about the facility and the fun atmosphere. We call our activities “work” but it feels like play! My name is Laila Kane. I have been a part of the Howard Gardner MI Charter School for the past 9 years. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education and an International Montessori Certificate for children ages 3 to 6 years. I have been teaching young children for over 35 years. My classroom assistant, of 9 years, is Marilyn Caputo. Steeped in the Montessori tradition, children call adults by their first names. It is a sign of mutual respect.
We are thrilled for the privilege of teaching your child. Our class composition is 8 kindergarten students and 14 preschool students. We have more very young children than we have had recently, so our first priority is settling into our routines. We have several group sessions on our new “cushions” each day and then embark on our individual “good hard works”!
Aside from our classroom work, the children have the following integrated arts schedule: Tuesday- Gym; Wednesday-Mandarin; Wednesday / Thursday -Music /Art.
The Kindergarten class will have Science on Tuesday PM and Spanish on Wednesday and Thursday PM.
Information and names of all the teachers can be found on our website, as can email addresses.
We encourage parents to keep in touch with us about any needs or concerns for your child. When observations are open, we welcome visitors by appointment.

I am Jaci Sandercock and am the teacher in the class. My assistant is PIta McFarland. We have been working together for 10 years. I have a Bachelor’s degree from Marywood University and am certified as a Montessori teacher for 3-6 year olds.
As always we are excited about a new school year- welcoming back old friends and making new friends. This year we have 22 children in our class, 7 of whom are in kindergarten. The first days of school are busy with getting to know each other and learning the rules. Our most important rule is the Golden Rule-treating other people the way we want to be treated.
Along with the academics of numbers and letters, we will be doing seasonal works such as works with apples, leaves, and pumpkins. We know we will have a fantastic year because we are off to such a good start.
My name is Sara Wintermute and I am the classroom teacher. This is my fourth year at HGS! Betsy Briganti is our classroom assistant and she has been with the school for 18 years. Sara graduated from Lycoming College with an Elementary Teaching Certification and a BA in History. Together we look forward to helping your children grow, not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well! If you have any question or concerns, please let us know!

My name is Arielle and I am the teacher of the new Kindergarten 4 class that was added at the Howard Gardner School. I am so excited to begin my journey at this wonderful school, along with my assistant Maria, and our new class of 15 kindergartners. I have a duel degree from Marywood University in early childhood and elementary education. Our assistant Maria graduated from the University of Scranton with a degree in health and human services. Maria has been with the school for 3 years and is well versed in Early Childhood Education. Maria and I are ready to help your children learn and grow in what many people believe to be the most important year of their lives.
Our classroom is made up of only kindergartners. We will be using a methodology that includes, but is not limited to, the Montessori Method, the Intelligences of Howard Gardner, and components of traditional kindergarten methods using the Common Core Curriculum. Your children will be doing what we call “works” independently, along with small group, and full group activities. Your children will grow academically, socially, emotionally, and also mature as students.
Along with our work in the classroom, we will have special classes including Gym, Art, Music, Science, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. The children will benefit from the teaching of my amazing colleagues in their specialized area of study. These teachers are second to none and have a remarkable curriculum ready for children of this age.
We encourage parents to keep in touch with us, so if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
