Kindergarten (ages 4-5)
Pre Primary One is off to a third year in our new home! Children and staff are very excited about the facility and the fun atmosphere. We call our activities “work” but it feels like play! My name is Laila Kane. This is my 10th year with the Howard Gardner MI Charter School. I hold a B.A. in Elementary Education and an International Montessori Certificate for children ages 3 to 6 years. I have been teaching young children for over 40 years. My classroom assistant, of 10 years, is Marilyn Caputo. Steeped in the Montessori tradition, children call adults by their first names. Maria Montessori believed that it showed mutual respect.
We are thrilled for the privilege of teaching your child. Our class composition is 11 kindergarten students and 10 children aged 4 or 5. We call this group our four year old kindergarteners but they are not being prepared for first grade this year as are the 5 and 6 year old kindergarten students.
There are only seven children new to this classroom so our returning students will be very busy being helpers and guides. Aside from our classroom work, the children have the following integrated arts classes: art, music, gym and Mandarin. All day children will have Spanish. The Kindergarten class will have Science. Information and names of all these teachers can be found on our website as well as email addresses.
We encourage parents to keep in touch with us about any needs or concerns for your child. Most of our correspondence will be via email as soon as we get all of the addresses. When observations are open, we welcome visitors by appointment.

I am Jaci Sandercock and am the teacher in the PrePrimary 2 class. My assistant is Pita McFarland. We have been working together for 11 years. I have a Bachelor’s degree from Marywood University and am certified as Montessori teacher for 3-6 year olds.
As always we are excited about new school year-welcoming back old friends and making new friends.
This year we have 21 children in our class, 10 who are K-5’s and 11 are K-4’s.The first days of school are busy with getting to know each other and learning the rules. Our most important rule is the Golden Rule-treating other people the way we want to be treated.
Along with the academics of numbers and letters, we will be doing seasonal works with apples, leaves, and pumpkins. We know we will have a fantastic year because we off to such a good start.
My name is Sara Wintermute and I am the classroom teacher. This is my fifth year at HGS! Betsy Briganti is our classroom assistant and she has been with the school for 18 years. I graduated from Lycoming College with an Elementary Teaching Certification and a BA in History. Together we look forward to helping your children grow, not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well! If you have any question or concerns, please let us know!

Our specials this year will include: Mandarin, Music, Art, Spanish, and Gym. Please remember to have your child wear sneakers on Tuesdays for gym. The kindergarteners will also be having science.
We look forward to having a very busy/exciting year!
My name is Arielle and I am the teacher of the Pre-Primary 4 class. I am so excited to begin this year along with my assistant Maria and our class of kindergarteners. I have a duel degree from Marywood University in early childhood and elementary education. Maria and I are ready to help your children learn and grow in what many people believe to be the most important year of their lives.
Our classroom is made up of only kindergarteners. We will be using a methodology that includes, but is not limited to, the Montessori Method, the Intelligences of Howard Gardner, and components of traditional kindergarten methods using the Common Core Curriculum. Your children will be doing what we call “works” independently, along with small group, and full group activities. Your children will grow academically, socially, emotionally, and also mature as students.
Along with our work in the classroom, we will have special classes including Gym, Art, Music, Science, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. The children will benefit from the teaching of my amazing colleagues in their specialized area of study. These teachers are second to none and have a remarkable curriculum ready for children of this age.
We encourage parents to keep in touch with us, so if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
